To discourage odors and mildew, rinse the backing of the carpet with a solution of ¼ cup bleach to 1 gallon of water. Brush gently with a soft bristle brush to make the solution does not damage and soak through the carpet yarns on the other side.  Do not apply this solution to wool fabric Couch Carpets . Apply a solution of ¾ cup bleach to 1 gallon of water to disinfect the subfloor. To clean, the bleach solution should remain in contact with the surface for about 10 minutes.
